What is Nylon (PA)?

Nylon is a synthetic thermoplastic polymer that is tough, lightweight, and resistant to chemicals and abrasion. It is one of the most widely used plastics in engineering due to its ability to perform in demanding mechanical environments. It is commonly used to manufacture moving parts that need to withstand friction and wear without lubrication, such as gears, bearings, and slide pads.

Advantages of CNC Machining Nylon (PA)

Advantage Description
Exceptional Wear Resistance Nylon is naturally self-lubricating and resists abrasion, making it ideal for moving parts that experience high friction.
High Tensile Strength Offers high load-bearing capacity and stiffness, especially in PA66 and Glass-Filled grades, suitable for structural use.
Chemical Resistance Highly resistant to oils, fuels, greases, and solvents, making it perfect for automotive under-the-hood applications.
Fatigue Resistance A tough and resilient material capable of absorbing shock and withstanding repeated cyclic loading without failure.
Electrical Insulation Good insulating properties combined with heat resistance make it suitable for electrical components and connectors.

Technical Parameters & Material Properties

We stock and machine various Nylon grades to suit specific engineering applications:
Grade Category Characteristics & Ideal Uses
Nylon 6 (PA6) Good balance of strength, toughness, and chemical resistance. Better surface finish than PA66.Uses: General housings, washers, wear pads, structural prototypes.
Nylon 66 (PA66) Higher stiffness, strength, and heat resistance than PA6. Lower water absorption.Uses: High-load mechanical gears, automotive engine components, fasteners.
Glass-Filled Nylon (PA+GF) Reinforced with glass fibers (e.g., GF30) for maximum rigidity and dimensional stability (Abrasive to machine).Uses: Structural parts, heavy-duty housings, pump bodies.
Oil-Filled Nylon Contains embedded lubricant for the lowest coefficient of friction.Uses: Heavy-duty bearings, wear strips, conveyor rollers, slide plates.

CNC Machining Guidelines for Nylon (PA)

Machining Nylon is relatively easy, but precision requires addressing its moisture absorption and thermal properties. JUCHENG follows these guidelines:
  • Moisture Management: Nylon is hygroscopic (absorbs moisture), which causes swelling. We store raw material in humidity-controlled environments and recommend designing tolerances no tighter than +/- 0.1mm for large parts to account for environmental expansion.
  • Heat Control: Nylon has a relatively low melting point compared to metals. We use sharp carbide tools, high spindle speeds, and aggressive feed rates to eject chips quickly, carrying heat away from the part to prevent melting.
  • Burr Removal: Machining nylon often leaves tenacious burrs. We employ specialized deburring techniques (cryogenic or manual trimming) to ensure clean, sharp edges on complex features like gear teeth.
  • Coolant Strategy: Flood coolant is essential to minimize heat build-up and flush away long, stringy chips that can otherwise wrap around the cutter.

Application Scenarios

Nylon is predominantly used in functional applications involving friction, wear, or load across various industries:
  • Mechanical Engineering: Gears, sprockets, pulleys, bearings, bushings, and wear strips.
  • Automotriz: Air intake manifolds, engine covers, oil pans, snap-fit connectors, and fuel caps.
  • Electronics: Coil bobbins, circuit breakers, electrical insulators, and cable ties.
  • Productos de consumo: Power tool housings, ski bindings, durable wheels, and casters.
  • Industrial: Conveyor system components, valve seats, and high-pressure washers.
